What a Friend We Have in Jesus

crossToday I’d like to talk to you about one of my favorite hymns of all time. It’s called “What a Friend We Have in Jesus.” This hymn has always stuck out to me as one of the most beautiful and well-stated songs ever written. Let’s look through some of the lyrics together.

“What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and griefs to bear. What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer. Oh, what peace we often forfeit, oh what needless pain we bear, all because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.” This first verse is saying that Jesus is our friend and He is there to carry our sins and our troubles. He is there to help. It is so special to have a God who loves us, and who we can talk to about anything, any time, at any place. There are so many times that we have such worry and grief, that we forget that we have a God who wants to hear about it, and who wants to help you. We have to remember that He is there, and when we take it to Him, He will relieve us of the pain and suffering; we simply have to take it to Him, and trust that He will take care of it.

I’ll leave you with the last two verses of the song. If you’ve never heard this song before, I’d encourage you to look it up online. “Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged. Take it to the Lord in prayer! Can we find a friend so faithful, who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness. Take it to the Lord in prayer! Are we weak and heavy-laden, cumbered with a load of care? Precious Savior still our refuge. Take it to the Lord in prayer! Do thy friends despise, forsake thee? Take it to the Lord in prayer! In His arms he’ll take and shield thee, thou wilt find a solace there.”
